“Guardian” is a large tabletop from a solid plane tree slab, 236 cm long, with a natural live edge. This format is suitable for a large solid wood dining table, a spacious work table or a meeting table for several people.
The tabletop can be purchased separately, or you can order a finished table with a base.
Plane trees are the giants of Sochi; you cannot miss them in Sochi and Adler. Huge crowns, mighty trunks, the characteristic mottled bark — these trees have long become part of the look of the southern city.
And the wood of the plane tree matches the tree itself. It is dense and heavy, with a very expressive texture. On a wide cut the pattern is especially interesting: calm longitudinal lines sit next to waves and more complex areas, and under different lighting the surface seems to change its shade. The color is warm — from golden beige and honey to deeper brown tones.
In a large solid slab, plane tree makes a completely different impression than in a small wood sample. Here you can see the scale of the tree — its age, the movement of the fibers, the traces of decades of growth. That is why plane tree is so good for large solid wood furniture: it needs space to show itself.
“Guardian” has almost two and a half meters of solid wood — 236 cm in length and 5.5 cm in thickness. The powerful tabletop, wide live edge and calm elongated shape create a sense of solidity.
The name was not chosen by chance. There is something in this tabletop of the plane tree itself — a large tree that has stood in its place for decades. “Guardian” does not fill the space — it holds it.
The natural pattern, live edge and shape of this slab exist in a single copy. Another plane tree will give a completely different cut. Therefore the future table cannot be repeated exactly — the photos show exactly the plane tree tabletop that you are purchasing.
This is a case where a table can stay in the family much longer than the furniture around it. Natural solid wood can be renewed and restored, preserving the wood itself and the history of the piece.
The slab was dried by vacuum thermal modification at 160 C. This drying changes the structure of the wood: it absorbs much less moisture and acquires high dimensional stability and resistance to fungi, rot and insect damage. As a result, thermally modified wood is much less prone to warping.
The tabletop is finished with hardwax oil. It reveals the depth and play of the plane tree pattern, emphasizes the natural color of the wood and preserves the pleasant-to-the-touch texture of the solid wood. The finish can be renewed as needed.
“Guardian” is a tabletop that has preserved the scale of a great Sochi plane tree.
You can purchase the solid plane tree tabletop separately or order a finished table made from the slab. We will select a base from our collection taking into account the size and weight of the tabletop.
