Ash is pale, from cream to light brown, sometimes with a darker heart. The growth rings are clearly visible, giving a bold, graphic figure.
It is hard and springy, steam-bends well and handles heavy loads. It needs protection in damp conditions; thermal treatment makes it darker and more stable.
