Freshly cut, it is yellow-green; over time it deepens to a golden brown. The growth rings are bold, with a clear contrast between early and late wood.
Black locust is dense and springy. It dulls blades quickly and needs pre-drilling for fixings, but it sands to a smooth finish and takes oil well.
Its natural resistance to rot makes it our choice for pieces exposed to moisture: garden furniture, steps and heavy-duty tabletops.
